About Gemma Hoff

Gemma Hoff is a hair and makeup designer. She began her career as a hairdresser in Hull, where she learned traditional techniques—graduated bobs, undercuts and precision cuts—earning the nickname "Vidal" after Vidal Sassoon for her dedication to the craft. After seven years honing her skills in salon settings, she moved to London at age 26 to work as a wig specialist ("Wiggy") in the West End, contributing to acclaimed productions such as Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and Jersey Boys. In the screen world, Hoff became known for her exemplary work both as a wig designer and as head of the hair and make-up department. Her credits include critically acclaimed productions such as The Crown (Seasons 1 & 2), Pieces of a Woman, The World to Come, and the Oscar-winning The Brutalist. She frequently collaborates with actresses Vanessa Kirby, Felicity Jones, and Lily James, often serving as their personal hair and make-up artist. On The Crown, she worked closely with Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith, a partnership that extended to Hobbs & Shaw, Pieces of a Woman, and The World to Come. Hoff's feature film credits include Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), and F1: The Movie (2025). She has also served as hair and make-up designer on projects like My Fault (2023), The Fantastic Four: First Steps (as make-up & hair lead for Vanessa Kirby), The Night Always Comes (2023), Oh. What. Fun (2025) for Amazon MGM, and several others. Known for her attention to detail both on set and at high-profile events, Hoff oversees continuity checks, hair and make-up fixes between takes, and red-carpet preparations. She even admirably tracked down a Tom Ford red nail polish in London during the COVID lockdowns for Vanessa Kirby's awards look.
